WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Before you cast your ballot, there are a few things you need to know.

Explore the links in this section and return back for videos to be posted later in the campaign. We will give you a fresh view on government, the electoral process, and the important factors that may affect how you cast your ballot.

BEFORE STUDENT VOTE DAY

Before you vote, there are a few things to do.

STEP 1: Know Your Electoral District
The election is actually 85 small elections. Before you vote, you need to know which electoral district you live in.

STEP 2: Know the Candidates
Different people are running in each riding. Before you vote, find out who is running where you will be voting.

STEP 3: Research the Political Parties
Most of those people running will represent a political party. Research what those parties are promising to do if elected.

STEP 4: Check Out the News
The news media are supposed to keep the politicians honest by looking behind their statements to the facts. Check out the newspaper or online news outlets to get a different perspective.

KNOW YOUR ELECTORAL DISTRICT

In our electoral system, we elect a local representative to the Legislature on our behalf, to be our voice and vote in the government. You live in one of the 85 electoral districts in the province.

The first step is to find out the district you live in.

VISIT THE ELECTIONS BC WEBSITE TO FIND YOUR ELECTORAL DISTRICT

KNOW THE CANDIDATES

There are different candidates running in each electoral district. The official deadline to register as a candidate was April 24th.

Which candidate would you like to represent you in the Legislature?

USE THE INTERACTIVE MAP ON THE CONNECT PAGE TO FIND OUT WHAT CANDIDATES ARE RUNNING IN YOUR RIDING.

RESEARCH THE POLITICAL PARTIES

In British Columbia, 16 political parties are running candidates for election. Not all parties are running candidates in every electoral district.

The BC Liberals, New Democratic Party of British Columbia and the Green Party of British Columbia are all running candidates in every district in the province. We have provided contact information for all parties in the province with some extra information on each of the three frontrunners including profiles of their leaders and some useful links.

BC REFERENDUM ON ELECTORAL REFORM

On May 12th, British Columbians will be casting an additional ballot on top of the one to elect their local MLA.

Citizen’s Assembly on Electoral Reform

Understanding First - Past - the - Post

The FPTP electoral system is how British Columbia currently elects members to the Legislative Assembly. Under this system, there is one elected member for each of the province’s 85 electoral districts, and voters vote for one candidate only by marking an “x” next to their preferred candidate.  The candidate who receives the most votes in each electoral district wins a seat as that districts’ representative. UNDERSTANDING SINGLE - TRANSFERABLE - BALLOT

THE BC-STV electoral system was proposed by the Citizen’s Assembly on Electoral Reform as a preferred method to elect members to the Legislative Assembly. Voters would elect between 2 and 7 MLAs per electoral district, depending on the district size and population.  The number of MLAs would not change, but there would be 20 geographically larger electoral districts.  Voters would vote by ranking preferences for as many candidates as they wished to support (1, 2, 3, etc.).  To be elected, a candidate must reach a certain threshold (or quota) of votes.
