Student election days will be held from January 16th to January 20th 2006.
Your school may choose whatever day fits its schedule best. However, if you decide
to run your vote in advance of the designated week, you may not receive your ballots
in time. Please remember to contact our office so that we can make any necessary
arrangements, if possible.
The Election Operations Manual
will help guide schools through the organization of their vote, outlining essential
procedures and offering suggestions for polling methods. Whether it is through
a static booth that students visit with their teachers or a traveling ballot
to each homeroom - the choice of voting arrangement is left to the individual
schools. However, full school participation is strongly encouraged on Student
Election Day. Previous participants have indicated that the program is appropriate
for the grade 4 or 5 level and up. Running the election as a school wide event
allows for greater excitement and an equal opportunity for all students to participate
across Canada.
Generally, a student committee or relative class is responsible for organizing
the mechanics of the election, whereby students become the Deputy Returning
Officers and Poll Clerks. By involving students in the operation of the election
it provides an opportunity for them to participate in an educational and empowering
experience, further engaging them in the democratic process.
The Student Vote Office will be responsible for sharing the results with media
partners and schools will be asked to keep their results confidential
until their official release. This is to ensure results are released
at the appropriate time and do not interfere with the official election in any
way.
