Learning Resources

Secondary School Resources
The activities in the Student Vote – Secondary Resource were developed for a broad range of grade levels to complement the mandated learning requirements of the social studies curriculum. Although some activities and discussion sections are most appropriate for the secondary school grade levels, all exercises can be modified by the teacher to accommodate the learning levels of younger, special needs or English as a Second Language students.

Although some activities are better suited for particular times of the campaign period, all the activities are independent of each other. Teachers are encouraged to select as many OR as few of the activities they deem best suited for their own class’ schedule and interest. Several exercises have been designed for students to follow and mirror unique aspects of the official election throughout the campaign period. Other exercises aim to act as general introductions to the election process or capture students’ thoughts and questions regarding targeted discussion points. As well, this resource offers learning opportunities for individual cross-curricular classes and the entire school.

Elementary School Resources

National Curriculum: A National Elementary Resource was created for schools across Canada, targeting the grade 4-5 level. The activities were modified from a previous document created in 2004 by the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (“You Choose”). The activities cover a variety of subject areas; including Language Arts, Social Studies, Visual Arts and Mathematics. Lessons 1- 4 are interrelated and based on a fictitious school yard improvement project. These exercises help students understand the processes of democracy through parallel activities. Lessons 5-7 are based on the real election and focus on actual campaign issues. Teachers are encouraged to select all or some of the activities based on available time and interest.

Ontario Schools: In 2004, the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario organized a curriculum writing team to develop an elementary school resource, “You Choose”, for the Student Vote program. Most of the lesson plans and activities are targeted at the grade 5 level. This same resource will be distributed to participating elementary schools in Ontario for the next federal election.

Special Note: For many reasons, Student Vote will not provide party platforms or campaign materials to you or your students. The greatest lesson your students will learn from this exercise is that citizenship is a responsibility. Empower your students to research the party platforms on their own, with their families and even with their friends in preparation for the vote.
